School
Committed parents and teachers established the evangelical School Society Haldensleben on their own initiative in July 2005.
The Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs approved the establishment of an independent secondary school on 28 August 2007. Our school opened its doors in the building of the grammar school (Heinrich-Heine-Grammar School) on 30 August 2007. At the very beginning there was only a class which consisted of 10 girls and 12 boys.
Many different towns of the Evangelical Church of the Province of Saxony /Church province of Central Germany were eager (wanted) to launch an initiative to establish a school, so the Regional Church together with the Order of St John (Johanniterorden) and the medical help organization “Johanniter-Unfallhilfe” supported this initiative. In the spring 2008 the school foundation (Johannes-Schulstiftung) was founded.
In the school year 2008/2009 the Evangelical secondary school Haldensleben was the first secondary school of the school foundation (Johannes-Schulstiftung).
The concept
We want to have a school
- · which prepares the students intensively for professional life
- · which cooperates closely with the companies in the region
- · which is aware of a sense of responsibility towards creation; Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
- · in which theory and practice are equally important
- · where the studentstackle and solveproblems independently
- · where learning and living make the students happy
Living together
On the basis of the Christian understanding of the human being, we want to create a school climate where children, teachers and parents feel safe.
Individual encouragement
We accept the children who come to usas they are, with all theirweaknessesand strengths. We want to give them individual encouragement and challenges.
Giving orientation
Ourschool aims tosupport youngpeople and give them orientation as they grow up.This is donethrough the mediationof religious andethicalideas, norms and rules that are necessaryfor life ina diverse world.
Strengthening social competence
Our Christianview of humanityrequires usto treat one another with respect. Acceptance of diversity, social cohesion, admitting mistakes, overcomingpeer pressureareimportant learninggoals. Support for the weaker pupils becomes manifest in social work training or medical training courses.
Responsibility towards creation
God′s commission- to preserve creation- obligates us tointegrateenvironmental thinkingand actionin everyday school life.
Knowledge and belief
The lesson aims to combine knowledge and belief. The questions of meaning are not raised only during classes of religious education but they are an integral part of everyday school life.
Education
Besides a lot ofpracticalexperience, the students needa solid theoreticaleducation. The following methodsallow an individual approachto the studentsandteach them towork independently andautonomously.
- Interdisciplinary teaching
Interdisciplinary teaching clarifies complex matters during school lessons. The students should learn effective andtargetedapplying of specificworking skillsin other contexts. Thus complex interrelationships become more visible for the pupils and the obviouscuriosity towardsnew knowledgeis preserved. - Free silent work
Working according to aweekly or monthlyplan, students learn to deal withtasks and problems independently, and tomanage theirtime. A good working environment, which is characterized bysilence andconcentration,is therefore important.
- Project work
Once a year over 6 weeks (about 60 school hours) are devoted to a given topic. The students set their own research focal points in the process. At the end of the project the students present the results to school, parents and the community. - Advisory Committee made up of business and vocational school
In terms of quality assurance an Advisory Committee should be established made up of vocational school and business representatives. In close contact with the school it advises teachers about the demands on the apprentices, gives feedback tracking the students’ progress and suggests improvements.
Fit for professional life
More and more economic enterprises complain that today young people are prepared insufficiently by the school for formal vocational training.Theintegration ofschooland practiceprovides the students withthe best possiblechancesin their search for a joband ensurescompanies with young professionals.
- Weekly workshops at school (Year 8)

Studentsacquire not only practical skills but also insights into organizational structuresofcompanies. The young people write reports about their work which are assessed by the company as well as their practical work. The students get a grade for these workshops in the school reports.
- The pupils’ company
There is a company burning school run by students. It helps them to deal with each other responsibly and to assumeresponsibility for the community.

The school company
On 10 September 2010 our school company was founded and the contract was signed with the sponsor and school management. Twelve pupils of Year 8 gave the name “burning school” to the company. They collect their first experience in business by making and selling candles under the guidance of Ms. Meyer. Ms. Meyer and the pupil Elisabeth, Year 7, took part in a certified advanced training lasting several days in Netherlands. They brought a lot of newideasandworkmaterial from there.
Meanwhile, countlesscandlesare produced. Customers of the school company are numerous individuals as well as many church institutions. Burning school participates in local church festivals and open days. The stands of the school company are often besieged because the student sells their candles and also offer candle making.
